Nintendo Super Mario Bros Game and Watch Limited Availability… Get it for Nostalgic Value

I’m a fairly nostalgic person, I often look at “things” that I have and many items tend to invoke memories and feelings from my childhood and even adulthood. Looking back at gaming when I was young, I feel like it was like which side of the fence you sit. It was either Sega or Nintendo or later on Playstation… just like you were either a Trekkie or a Star Wars fan… for the record I was the latter!

Nintendo was a huge part of my youth, I owned every single home and portable console Nintendo up to the Nintendo 64… with many minutes, hours, days and weeks sitting engrossed in any game they released. Arguably the greatest and most well known characters in any gaming universe is the Italian stallion Mario and to a lesser extent his younger brother Luigi.

The game and watch handheld games revolutionised the gaming industry and really took the world by storm. I still have the original Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong II, Oil Panic and even Super Mario Bros and still occasionally get these out for a quick session. You come to realise how simple the game and watch was, from the minimal buttons to the basic “graphics” these games were great back then and can still provide many minutes of entertainment now.

The game and watch series is a very highly collectable space, games without screen bleed and original boxes can go for significant amounts of money. Even the original Donkey Kong which is in fair condition would fetch between $120-$200!

Getting back to the 35th anniversary release, this special edition was released to the market in 2020 and almost immediately sold out at all retailers. Shortly after release, flippers were hitting the secondary market and selling their pre-orders for double the retail price… I think this just shows that I’m not the only person who holds this game close to the heart. The re-release includes the following games:

  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
  • Ball (Mario version)
  • A digital clock

I ended up purchasing 2 copies of this game… one to play and one to keep sealed as a collectable. Lately the resell value of these has dropped a little, often selling around the $100-$120 mark. The re-release was only for a limited time and Nintendo stopped manufacturing and shipping to retailers at the end of March 2021. So any stock you can find now is the “final” stock on the market, you’ll find that many Australian stores won’t have these on their shelves and won’t be able to restock.

At the moment though, there are only 4 places you can still purchase this re-release without paying above RRP… hurry though as once these are gone, the only way to get your hands on these is to purchase on the secondary market. If previous Nintendo games are anything to go by, this should hold its value fairly well.

So where can you purchase this at the moment?
